Differences within the government on the forthcoming budget deepened last week when the finance and public expenditure departments reiterated at private meetings that they were determined to see over €400 million in welfare cuts next year. Coalition insiders say that if this happened it could lead to the resignation of social protection minister Joan Burton.

With ministers heading on their August break, positions in government have hardened ahead of what are sure to be fraught...
