Clinton's gay marriage U-turn a pragmatic one

The former secretary of state's change of position reflects public opinion, and may be a sign of her presidential ambitions, writes Niall Stanage.

The ground is shifting on gay marriage in the United States - and politicians including Bill and Hillary Clinton, as well as some Republicans, are rushing to get on the right side of the issue.

Public polling on other divisive social topics, notably abortion, has shown little sign of a changing trend one way or another in recent years. But the picture is very different on same-sex marriage.
