Every gardener should be on the lookout for plants that can withstand the worst of downpours, writes Ros Drinkwater.

Having written last week in praise of old fashioned flowers, a week of torrential rain came close to decimating my own.

I have a huge clump of fennel which, every year for five years, has soared skywards and stayed that way, a beautiful cloud of grass green, until it gets cut down in February.
