Cliff Taylor: There is precious little engagement in the post-crisis debate we should have about the balance between tax and spending

If you go back to where it all started, nobody argued that we should “do” all the austerity at once.

Maybe I’m going soft. But I can’t really see the sense in all the international bodies, the fiscal advisory council and so on continuing to hit us over the head and say we must have a €2 billion adjustment in the Budget in October.

An adjustment of this size will probably not be needed to reach the 3 per cent borrowing target in 2015. We won’t know this for sure until...
