The revelation that operating losses at the Dublin department store Clerys have risen to around €2 million this year has prompted fresh fears about potential job losses and rationalisations in the retail sector.

"The challenges that Clerys are facing are not specific to them," said David Fitzsimons, head of Retail Excellence Ireland. "Many retailers are loss-making, and significantly loss-making at that. There has been a very significant decline across the board."
