The first opera to premiere in Waterford since 1793 will take place at the Theatre Royal next May as part of extensive events to celebrate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of the city.

The Invader, composed by Eric Sweeney with libretto by Mark Roper, is inspired by the The Bacchae, a Greek classic not for the squeamish. In it, the women of Thebes are lured into a forest and turned into wild and vicious creatures...
