I finally caught up with the RTE Horizons 2006 lunchtime series in the National Concert Hall for the last of its four concerts last Tuesday. It featured pianist/composer Philip Martin who delivered a world premiere of his own as well as choosing two accompanying pieces by contemporary composers, American Philip Glass and Estonian Arvo Part. The ancillary works were well chosen as Martin’s Piano Concerto No 3 owed much to both composers.
