Veronica Dunne’s emotional radio tribute to her lifelong friend Joan Sutherland, who died last week, was straight from the heart.

The bond between them went back to their early days as house sopranos in Covent Garden when, after gruelling singing sessions, the pair would reward themselves generously with fish and chips.
