The annual RTE Living Music Festival has had its disappointments in recent years, but not with the music which provided many brilliant concerts.

The RTE Music Department, which organises this festival of modern, contemporary, minimalist, serialist, avant garde (or whatever you’re having yourself, once it’s not between Monteverdi and Mahler), has had occasional nail-biting sessions before the off.

The Italian Luciano Berio took seriously ill and had to withdraw at the last minute, as did the German Hans Werner Henze. But last year the festival struck gold with the iconic Steve Reich turning up...
