With its opening number Mack the Knife, The Threepenny Opera has offered the world the definitive cabaret standard, and the ballad has been much recorded and imitated since the opera's first performance in 1928. However, despite this cultural familiarity with the anti-hero's escapade, Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's opera is rarely professionally produced.
