Thousands of Somali civilians began fleeing villages in their war-torn country's southern region last week, after Kenya's military announced that it would target al-Shabaab militants in surrounding areas.

The warning was given by Kenyan military spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir - he posted on his Twitter account the names of ten villages that would be targeted. He tweeted that the villages would come under "attack continuously", and asked relatives of people in the towns to warn...
