While the French prime minister Dominique de Villepin’s backbenchers are still busy burying his ill-fated reform plan, French political leaders have already moved on to the next stage: their campaigns for the 2007 presidential election.

President Jacques Chirac’s decision to withdraw the controversial proposal could prove fatal to Villepin’s political career.

Crucially, the move takes place one year before the next presidential and general elections.
