The children of self-employed parents starting college this year could have to wait until next January for a student grant, unless their parents file their tax return for 2012 well in advance of Revenue's deadlines.

An external review of the government's centralised student grants system, Student Universal Support Ireland (Susi), was published just over a week ago, recommending that a fully online grants system be phased in over the coming years.
