As expected, childcare stole the show in last Wednesday's budget with Minister for Finance Brian Cowen giving €1,000 to parents of children under six.

Part of a new five-year childcare strategy, the €1,000 early childcare supplement came hand in hand with increased maternity leave and a promise to create an extra 50,000 childcare places by 2010.
