A childcare lobby group has slammed the central Garda vetting unit for its failure to prioritise childcare workers, writes Louise McBride.

The vetting unit, set up to improve child protection, is being expanded so it can vet all new teachers and school employees this September.

Staff checks will then be backdated to include primary and post-primary teachers.
