Only five out of 25 independent grocery stores in Tipperary town survived after the Groceries Order was introduced in 1987, according to the chairman of the Tipperary Chamber of Commerce.

Only five out of 25 independent grocery stores in Tipperary town survived after the Groceries Order was introduced in 1987, according to the chairman of the Tipperary Chamber of Commerce.

Brian Rafferty said the order protected larger grocery stores at the expense of smaller ones.

He said he agreed with a recommendation from the Consumer Strategy Group that the Groceries Order should be scrapped.
