The by-election campaigns have been negative to the point of nihilism, reflecting the electorate's angry mood.

Yeats’ apprehension concerned a wider canvass than our mere domestic polity. However for the traditional political parties observing the by-election campaigns, the thought must have occurred as to whether indeed “the centre cannot hold”.
