There simply would not have been time for the sense of public outrage to calm down, as has been the case this week. Bertie Ahern is blessed that the debacle preceded - not followed - the summer recess.

As it is, the government had a bad week and a slightly better weekend. Nobody can be left in any doubt after last weekend which of the two men, McDowell or Cowen, was the man of substance....
