There are twice as many cattle in Kerry as people.

Anyone who has ever listened to the classic Steve Martin song “Cows with Guns” is likely to get a chill up the spine reading the latest livestock survey from the Central Statistics Office.

It reveals that there are more cows than humans in Ireland. The total number of cattle increased by 7,600 (0.1 per cent) to 5,925,300. The total number of sheep was 3,321,300, an increase of 199,300 (6.4 per cent) on December 2010.
