Callers lose out on roaming charges
Mobile phone users will not be automatically able to avail of cheaper mobile phone roaming charges this summer following a crucial EU vote last week.
An EU committee vote last Thursday left consumers ‘‘at the mercy of telecom operators’’, according to the consumer lobby group, the European Consumers’ Organisation (Beuc).
The cost of making mobile phone roaming calls will fall by as much as 70 per cent this summer when a new EU regulation, spearheaded by Viviane Reding, the EU telecommunications commissioner, becomes law.
But existing mobile phone customers will have to contact their operators directly...
