A new ministry should be established to take responsibility for Ireland's pension time-bomb, according to pension industry representatives.

The Irish Brokers Association (IBA) has called for the establishment of a Minister for Pensions to ensure ''proper ownership of the challenges posed by Ireland's ageing population, with decisions centralised in one government department.

Ciaran Phelan, the IBA's chief executive, said that Ireland faced a pension crisis that would ''eclipse the banking crisis in years to come....
