Buyers appear to be holding off in the hope that house prices will continue to tumble.
‘‘Traditionally in the summer the mortgage market is quiet anyway, but it is definitely more so this year,” said Paul Short, president of the Independent Mortgage Advisors Federation.
Short said the usual summer lull was being multiplied by stricter lending conditions. ‘‘Yes, funding is available, but money is expensive,” he said.
