It might not have seemed like the best moment to launch a start-up hotel group, but David Byrne has seen Great National Hotels go from strength to strength since its foundation last February

Irish tourism is in crisis, with hoteliers struggling to deal with plunging revenues and extremely difficult trading conditions. So when David Byrne announced he was launching a start-up in the hotel sector, people baulked.

‘‘They thought we were crazy,” he said, ‘‘but we are giving hotels the opportunity to compete for a better share in a stagnant market. So, in some ways, the market conditions are advantageous for us.
