Hundreds of thousands of bus users nationwide are facing significant fares hikes - potentially as high as 20 per cent - before the end of the year.

The increases are to come after the Department of Transport told bus operators there would be no replacement for the fuel tax rebate - which covers a third of fuel bills - from next November.
