Burton scraps special diet scheme for new entrants

Social protection minister Joan Burton has scrapped a scheme which helps people on special diets to pay their food bills.

The €11 million per year scheme was paid to people on social welfare who had been prescribed a special diet as part of their medical treatment. They were entitled to top-up payments of up to Euro 20 a week.

But Burton signed an order to bar any new applications to the diet supplement scheme from February 1....
