Building society bill

Tomorrow’s publication of the legislation on building society demutualisation must be one of the most long-awaited bills in recent years.

One reason for the endless delay was the problem of framing a piece of legislation that would allow Irish Nationwide to demutualise, while providing some element of protection for the EBS, which makes much show about its commitment to mutuality.

The focus now will be on the timetable for flogging off Irish Nationwide and paying off its long-suffering depositors. But perhaps the more interesting question surrounds the future of the EBS.
