Thousands of construction workers are affected by the "widespread" failure of their employers to pay into a mandatory industry pensions scheme, according to Paul Kenny, the pensions ombudsman.

Thousands of construction workers are affected by the "widespread" failure of their employers to pay into a mandatory industry pensions scheme, according to Paul Kenny, the pensions ombudsman.

He said that many employers were avoiding making payments into the registered employment agreement, which covers all construction industry employees.

Kenny said the number of complaints he received about abuses of the scheme has risen dramatically this year.
