Budget will not target most child benefit rates

The rates of child benefit for most children will not be affected by Tuesday's budget, though the current higher payments for third and subsequent children will be reduced, *The Sunday Business Post* has learned.
Fine Gael and Labour ministers compromised on the controversial issue, with Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton successfully arguing against a general cut in child benefit, which costs the state some €2.5 billion a year.
However, Burton had to back down...
