Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore has defended the government's budget strategy and said reforms were fair and reasonable.

He noted there would be no additional taxes on working people, that basic social welfare payments and child benefit had been protected and that pupil-teacher rations had been preserved at primary level.

"We have set out to do it as fairly as possible, as reasonably as possible and I believe we are doing that," he told RTE's Morning Ireland...
