Budget 2012: No cheer for vulnerable citizens
The budget cracked down on welfare spending, which will enrage those who have already had to endure cuts in years gone by, writes Emma Kennedy.
Despite maintaining the weekly rates in all core social protection benefits, cuts across other areas of welfare spending will further reduce the money available to many vulnerable people.
It fell to the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin, to outline the Government's plan to cut its spending in the coming year. In total, the Government needed to find some €2.2 billion on the expenditure side of the equation in Budget 2012.
