Bill Bryson's new book has gone through several incarnations. He originally wanted to write something about the iconic baseball player Babe Ruth, but worried that this would be of little interest to his non-American readers. He then considered a dual biography of Ruth and Charles Lindbergh, the aviator whose solo flight from New York to Paris electrified the world just a few weeks before Ruth made his record-breaking 60th home run in a single season.
