The EU ambassador to the United States John Bruton is to return to Ireland today to begin his offensive to try to secure the first presidency of the European Council.

The EU ambassador to the United States John Bruton is to return to Ireland today to begin his offensive to try to secure the first presidency of the European Council.

Bruton’s term of office as EU ambassador in Washington ended on Friday. The former Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader is now expected to lobby prime ministers in the European People’s Party (EPP), which has the muscle to select the next president.
