Less than a year ago Larry Broderick, general secretary of the Irish Bank Officials Association (IBOA), looked like he had picked the wrong fight.

Last week, however, he was celebrating his finest hour in his seven years in charge of the bank workers’ union.

Bank of Ireland, one of his chief adversaries, had announced plans last May to close its generous pension scheme, which guaranteed staff two-thirds of their final salaries when they retired....
