House owners living in an average two-adult and two-child home are facing annual water charges of €500, according to senior consultants to Bord Gáis which successfully bid to run the state's new water utility, Irish Water.

The analysis, carried out by one of the country's leading engineering consultancies, was based on a pricing model under which house owners were charged the same rate as existing commercial water users.
