The legislation governing the opening hours of betting shops is impeding growth in the sector and preventing it realising its potential as an employer, according to a leading industry figure.

The argument for longer opening hours from September 1 to March 31 each year was reiterated last week by the managing director of Ladbrokes Ireland, Joe Lewins, who described the 6.30pm winter closing time as the "strangest and silliest" of the regulations imposed.
