8th July, 2006

Bank of Ireland is to offer free shares in the company to its American-based staff for the first time.

The bank, which announced full-year profits of €1.6 billion in recent weeks, will grant free shares worth up to 7 per cent of annual salary to each staff member, bringing them into line with Irish staff.

They must hold the shares for three years before selling them in order to avoid a tax hit, however.
