Well, the optics are interesting. On Wednesday, the day after his inauguration, François Hollande goes to Berlin, rather than Angela Merkel coming to Paris.

Hollande and Merkel will cling together because they know that the cost of a punch-up right now could be huge.

Well, the optics are interesting. On Wednesday, the day after his inauguration, François Hollande goes to Berlin, rather than Angela Merkel coming to Paris. Of course, this may just be scheduling, but I would be surprised if Hollande picks a fight with the German chancellor. He will huff and puff about renegotiating the treaty, but the result will be some 'add on', with growth measures agreed, but the main points of the treaty remaining....
