Bishop Gerard Clifford, who has been auxiliary bishop of Armagh for more than 20 years, has retired on the grounds of ill health. Bishops are required to submit their resignation at the age of 75; Clifford is 71.
Five weeks ago, Monsignor Eamon Martin, 51, was appointed coadjutor Archbishop of Armagh. He will take over from Cardinal Sean Brady on his retirement, which is expected to happen shortly.
