A leading British retail chain has made a bid to buy the British business of BWG Holdings, the Irish-owned company behind the Spar franchise.

Bestway Cash and Carry, a wholesaler with annual sales of €2 billion, approached BWG management in recent months in an effort to acquire its British subsidiary, Appleby Westwood.
