Betting on reform

The various types of operators in the gambling industry are all hoping that the government will push ahead with much-needed reform, which they say will create jobs and generate tax money

The Irish gambling industry is as diverse as the sports and games of chance that people bet on.

The diversity between the needs of poker clubs, greyhound breeders, slot machine operators and the growing hordes of online gamblers more than complicates the government’s task of reforming the sector.

The past three years have seen two major reviews of gambling legislation and two official reports on the sector but no change.
