Controversy is commonplace at the Mahon Tribunal, but it usually arises from witnesses’ allegations, rather than tongue-lashings meted out to tribunal staff.

This is the reason why Conor Maguire, who is Taoiseach Bertie Ahern’s senior counsel at the tribunal, caused such a storm last week when he accused the inquiry of allowing itself to become a platform for the airing of ‘‘preposterous allegations’’ against Ahern.
