With 40,000 nurses putting their feet down last week over pay and working conditions, few could argue that health is an uncontentious issue.

Even fewer could argue that nurses are the only ones with gripes about the health service.

The 166 patients lying on trolleys in accident and emergency units (A&E) last weekend would no doubt have a thing or two to say about the quality of this country’s health service.
