Government TDs and senators are preparing to resist Taoiseach Enda Kenny's plans to abolish the Seanad in a public campaign led by former PD minister and attorney general Michael McDowell.
Sources said that McDowell, who stridently opposed the referendum to extend Oireachtas powers of inquiry last month, was seen as pivotal to that referendum's defeat. He is now poised for "round two - this time on the Seanad".
