European Commission president Jose Barroso stepped up a warning to Greece that keeping the euro requires respect for agreements to cut spending.

“I believe Greece should stay in the euro area, assuming that it will respect its commitments,” Barroso told the European Parliament today in Strasbourg, France. The commission is the executive arm of the 27-nation European Union.
