Barroso says euro faces “truly systemic crisis”

UPDATE: The euro has hit a five-week low against the dollar after European Commission President Jose Barroso said the area was facing a systemic crisis.

The euro dropped to a five-week low against the dollar as European Commission President Jose Barroso said the region is facing a “truly systemic crisis.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking after a meeting with Taoiseach Enda Kenny in Berlin, said Germany was prepared to cede some national sovereignty for the sake of the currency union.

Kenny said changes to EU treaties would be "very challenging".
