Mary Banotti has had an interesting life.
A grandniece of Michael Collins, she emigrated at a young age and became embroiled in a legal crisis when her husband absconded with their baby daughter. She returned home, became a Fine Gael MEP and finished a very respectable runner-up to Mary McAleese in the dramatic 1997 presidential election.
