‘Bananamania' hit Japan in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when young Japanese writer Banana Yoshimoto released her first novel, Kitchen. That book and her subsequent works went on to receive international acclaim.

Yet as a writer, Yoshimoto (who took the pseudonym ‘Banana' as it sounded more androgynous in her own country) has remained in a slight limbo.
