It was love at first sight. I had spent a blissful day in the Glengarriff Bamboo Park on the Beara Peninsula in west Cork. I had wandered through dappled groves of giant bamboo, strolled down avenues of tree ferns, and dallied in an orchard of the prettiest palm trees on the planet, the diminutive Trachycarpus Wagneriaus.
