BAI may relax current affairs rule

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) may permit additional derogation from the 20 per cent news and current affairs requirement applying to radio broadcasters.

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) may permit additional derogation from the 20 per cent news and current affairs requirement applying to radio broadcasters by certain music-driven, youth and niche radio services, according to a new strategy document.

The potential relaxation of the requirement will be welcomed by stations that have been critical of the prescriptive news and current affairs quota in the past, seeing it as a curbing profitability.
