Retail sales fell by an average of 4.2 per cent in the three months from April to June, declining for the 13th consecutive quarter as bad weather discouraged shoppers.

Retail sales decline by four per cent in second quarter

Retail sales fell by an average of 4.2 per cent in the three months from April to June, declining for the 13th consecutive quarter as bad weather discouraged shoppers.

A review by industry group Retail Excellence Ireland (REI) found the worst performing sectors in the second quarter included garden centres, where sales were down by nearly 20 per cent on a year earlier.

In April alone, garden centre sales plummeted by 39 per cent as above-average rainfall...
